The German word for stein
is Steinzeugkrug,
Two major periods of time are responsible for the origin of the stein.
From 1340 until 1380, more than 25 million Europeans died from bubonic plague.
Then during several summers in the
1400s, millions of little black flies descended upon Europe. By the early
1500s, many areas of Germany had passed laws
that all food and beverage containers should be covered. An unknown
progressive thinker figured out that by adding
a hinged lid with a thumblift, one could still drink with one hand.
